The Larkins Prize
The Department of Medicine (RMH/WH) established the Larkins prize to honour the contribution of Professor Richard Larkins. Larkins held the positions of Head of the Department of Medicine (RMH/WH) and the James Stewart Professor from 1984 to 1998, and was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences from 1998 to 2003.
The Larkins Prize (of approximately $1000) is awarded to the student achieving the highest results for the fourth year Bachelor of Science Honours course in the Department of Medicine (RMH/WH); students are nominated by the Head of Department. The inaugural Richard Larkins Prize was presented in 2000 for students completing the course in 1999.
Want to go on to a PhD?
Two new ‘top-up’ PhD scholarships valued at $18,000 each over three years will be available from December 2008
To be eligble, students must enrol as a PhD student with the Department and obtain a competitive scholarship.
If the Department's Larkins prize winner has obtained a competitive scholarship, he or she will have first preference to one of the two top-up scholarships to continue their studies with the Department. The second scholarship will be offered to the best PhD applicant. Should the Larkins Prize winner decline the scholarship, both scholarships will be made available to PhD applicants on a merit basis.
Merit will be judged on academic performance, publication record, extra-curricular activities associated with medical research, recommendation/s from external referees, community leadership, and demonstrated commitment to a career in medical research.
The value of the scholarships will be increased each year in line with the MRS.
Offers will be made in December of each year.
